How do you learn new technologies?
I'm all about learning by doing, honestly. I don't really do tutorials unless I need to get up to speed fast — like when I was diving into Tanstack/** or learning GraphQL for my Apollo certification.
Mostly, I just pick a tech that interests me (like when I fell in love with shadcn/ui or Tailwind CSS) and then build something real with it. That’s how I learned Next.js — started with a dumb little grammar checker using GPT-3, and never left the ecosystem since.
I also spend a lot of time reading docs, watching YouTube videos, and lurking on Reddit or X (you know, when I should be snowboarding instead). And if I’m at work and forced to use something I don’t like (looking at you, Azure web apps), I’ll dig into it just to find ways to make it less painful — which usually means refactoring the whole damn thing.
Oh, and certifications? I did a couple from Meta and Apollo — not because they’re super valuable, but because they force me to go deep and actually structure what I’ve been picking up on the fly.
So yeah — build, break, rebuild, repeat. That’s the Nathan method 🤷♂️.
